Course Description:
Torah, Prophets, & Writings Series Overview
The Torah, Prophets I and II, and Writings series covers four terms. Students who take all four courses will be able to say that their thinking and way of life is grounded in the very bedrock of the Scriptures. The acronym for the Torah, the Prophets, and the Writings is the word 'Tanakh' (a Hebrew acronym that will be explained in class). Did you know that at one level the New Covenant Scriptures are a commentary on the Tanakh? Thus, the better one knows the Tanakh, the better one will know the New Covenant Scriptures, the God of Israel and the Nations, and Yeshua the Messiah.
Torah
The Five Books of Moses (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, & Deuteronomy) are the very core of the bedrock on which Jewish and Biblical thinking and living rests. The word 'Torah' can mean a directive that points out a way (namely the way of the LORD), or general instruction or teaching, or particular instruction or teaching, or rule, or law, or the Five Books of Moses. So David was able to say, "Oh how I love your Torah, all day long it is my meditation" (Psa 119:97). Yeshua the Messiah was not only the master teacher of the Torah, but the one who "filled it full" and enfleshed it! Our study will focus on the origins, meaning, and significance of Torah for Messiah-followers.

Howard's primary interests include the Hebrew Bible, Biblical studies, Rabbinic Literature, Jewish culture and tradition, and the Jewish essence of the New Covenant Scriptures and faith. He has been in full-time Jewish ministry since 1980, and has served as the Congregational Leader of Beth Messiah Congregation since 1991. Howard has been the President of MSI as well as a Board and Faculty member since its inception in 1994. He was the President of the UMJC from 2008–2012.
