GOING LIVE ONLINE OCT 12

Ready, Set, Hebrew! is a LIVE ONLINE Term 1 2023 FULL COURSE held virtually on Zoom on Six Thursdays: Oct 12, 19, 26, Nov 2, 9, 16 from 7:00–8:30pm EST. Once you register for this course, log into your MSI account, choose this course in 'My Courses', and you will find the Zoom link in the Course Contents along with all the course materials as they are shared.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
The starting line for learning Biblical Hebrew is the alphabet. Unlike English, the Hebrew alphabet is comprised only of consonants, each one making only one sound. With only a couple of exceptions, what you see is what you say. We will begin by learning to identify, write, and pronounce all 22 Hebrew consonants. Then, since the Hebrew alphabet does not contain any vowels, we will move on to understanding the Tiberian vowel system found in Modern Hebrew Bibles. This will include the names, pronunciations, and classifications of these vowel symbols. Our journey will conclude with a review of the basic rules for understanding syllables, including how to distinguish between accented and unaccented syllables, and the names and functions of the additional ‘pointings’ that appear in the Biblical text. Our finish line for this course will include some exercises that will allow us to practice pronouncing selected passages of the Torah aloud, providing the warm-up we need to proceed to Biblical Hebrew 1 where we will begin learning the vocabulary and grammar of Biblical Hebrew.

The textbook for our entire series will be: Karl V. Kutz and Rebekah L. Josberger, Learning Biblical Hebrew — Reading for Comprehension: An Introductory Grammar (Bellingham, WA: Lexham Press, 2018) ISBN 9781683590842. We will use the companion workbook as well: Karl V. Kutz and Rebekah L. Josberger, Learning Biblical Hebrew Workbook: A Graded Reader with Exercises (Bellingham, WA: Lexham Press, 2019), ISBN 9781683592440. Lifelong learners are expected to purchase these two books prior to the beginning of the course.
