COURSE DESCRIPTION:
In this course, we will explore the key covenants of the Scriptures. We will dive deep into the biblical text to better understand how covenants shape the relationships between God, humanity, the nation of Israel, and Yeshua-followers today. From the Adamic Covenant in the Garden of Eden to Jeremiah’s prophecy about a New Covenant, we will do in-depth analysis of the text to gain a greater understanding of the promises and obligations that have shaped the biblical narrative. This course will also seek to navigate some current discussions in the messianic movement, including the relationship of the covenants to one another, the importance of Jewish identity, and the hope of the Messiah in the covenants.

COURSE OUTLINE*:
Week 1: Introduction to Covenants & The Adamic Covenant

• Overview of the concept of covenants in the Bible
• Different types of covenants in the Bible (e.g. conditional vs unconditional, bilateral vs unilateral)

• Overview of the Adamic Covenant

Week 2: The Covenant with Noah

• Study of the Noahic Covenant
• Significance of the rainbow as a symbol of the covenant
• Assessment of the Noahic Covenant functions in the biblical narrative

Week 3: The Abrahamic Covenant

• Study of the Abrahamic Covenant
• The promise of land, descendants, universal blessing
• The significance of circumcision as a sign of the covenant

Week 4: The Mosaic Covenant

• Study of the Mosaic Covenant
• The Suzerain-Vassal Treaty
• The Ten Commandments and the Covenant Code

Week 5: The Davidic Covenant

• Study of the Davidic Covenant
• The promise of an eternal kingdom to David
• The fulfillment of the Davidic Covenant in the Son of David.

Week 6: The New Covenant

• Overview of the New Covenant
• How the New Covenant relates to the other covenants
• The reality of the New Covenant today

Dr. Michael Gabizon
Dr. Michael Gabizon

Ph.D., McMaster University, Early Judaism, 2022; Th.M., Dallas Theological Seminary, Old Testament and Hebrew & Cognate Studies, 2015; B.A. Moody Bible Institute, 2010.

Dr. Gabizon graduated from the Religious Studies department at McMaster University in 2022, where he wrote his dissertation “The Identity of Mixed Offspring in the Hebrew Bible and Second Temple Literature.” His scholarly research includes the construction of Jewish identity in antiquity, the development of Messianic hope in Jewish thought, and matters pertinent in the modern day Messianic Movement. Dr. Gabizon has delivered lectures at McMaster University, taught as an adjunct at The Kings University (Dallas, TX), and is currently the Teaching Associate at Beth Ariel Messianic Congregation in Montreal, QC. He has published on the topic of messianism in Isaiah and the matrilineal principle in Judaism, and is currently researching for the Messianic Bible Project, which seeks to identify the diverse ways Jewish communities have interpreted passages in the Hebrew Bible and applied them to the Messiah. Michael is married to his wife, Hannah, and they have four children.
