GOING LIVE ONLINE OCT 9 or WATCH LATER
What is the Bible? What Does it Do? is a LIVE ONLINE Term 1 2023 FULL COURSE held virtually on Zoom on Six Mondays: Oct 9, 16, 23, 30, Nov 6, 13 from 7:00–8:30pm EST. Once you register for this course, log into your MSI account, choose this course in 'My Courses', and you will find the Zoom link in the Course Contents along with all the course materials as they are shared.
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Come enjoy a deep dive into the origins of the Bible and what it does to its hearers and readers! We will learn everything from what existed before the Bible that became the Bible, how the individual scrolls came to be, what it was like before the scrolls were put together in a collection, how the scrolls or books eventually came to be put together from Genesis to Revelation, how before the printing press hearing the Bible read aloud was the chief way of engaging the Bible, why hearing the Bible read aloud is still an important rite that is strategically designed to transform us, how the Bible from one angle is an invitation to join in Jacob’s wrestling with God, what it means for the Bible to be called ‘the Word of God’, why the Bible is ‘authoritative’ for the people of God (YHWH), what the Bible DOES to its hearers and readers, how it is meant to be lived, and much more! We will also discuss the meaning of ‘Scripture’. Moreover, we will discuss why the Bible was never meant to be a self-help manual. By the end of the course, you will never see, hear, or read the Bible the same, and you will understand what Paul meant when he said: “For whatever was written in earlier times was written for our instruction, so that through the perseverance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we may have hope”. (Rom. 15:4)
